Based in Amman, the Assistant Director works with the Director to manage the overall administrative and organizational operation of the School in Jordan.


Essential Functions

Offer may be contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.

Program Administration:
• Assists the Director in all aspects of program administration
• Assists Director in daily administration of the academic program, including student placement and pre- and post-program testing, course scheduling and evaluation
• Manages all on-site informational databases including: student information, class registration, class lists, course descriptions, instructor profiles, final grades, and course and program evaluations. Submits all required information to the Director/IPOCS/the Office of the Registrar in a timely manner
• Assists Director in working with the UJ Language Center in setting up course schedules and classroom scheduling
• Collects course syllabi and course materials from faculty before the beginning of each semester
• Serves as a liaison between instructors and administrative staff in planning co-curricular and extra-curricular activities
• Assists Director in designing, distributes and collects evaluations for all courses
• Assists Director in organizing guest lecture series
• Coordinates organization of Project Week activities and evaluation
• Contributes to organization of Reflection Day
• Designs and implements together with the RC on-site student orientations that cover all academic, social, safety, and health issues
• Assists Director in identifying and securing student internship placements, and in monitoring placements throughout the semester and following up with supervisors
• Participates in student activities and excursions
• Assists Director with: student advising/counseling (academic, personal, medical, career etc.); student discipline
• Maintains office hours and counsels students as needed
• Enforces Arabic Language Pledge when appropriate
• Contributes to continuous development of faculty and student handbooks, with guidance from Director
• In accordance with individual contracts and program need, the Assistant Director may be required to teach or assist with one course per term
• Assists the Director and RCs in dealing with emergencies as they may arise
• Assists with purchase and maintenance of all necessary office furniture and equipment, including computer equipment and contracts
• If qualifications permits, assists with training of teaching staff, course and curriculum development, teacher supervision and advising

Management and Personnel:
• Reports to the Director of the School in Jordan. In the absence of the Director, has decision-making authority, and is expected to consult with IPOCS on any significant decisions
• Assists Director in recruiting faculty
• Assists with the training of the Resident Coordinator(s)
• Upon request, attends meetings of directors of the Middlebury Schools Abroad. A summer meeting is usually held in July on the Middlebury campus while the Language Schools are in session

External Relations:
• Along with the Director, acts as liaison between Middlebury and partner university
• Shares responsibility with Director in serving as liaison with local institutions, ministries of education, U.S. embassy, NGOs, local visa/residence permit issuing agencies and similar bodies, medical institutions, law enforcement agencies, and all other institutions and agencies in Jordan
• Assists Director in coordinating all on-site arrangements (housing, local transportation, meetings) for visiting delegations, whether by Middlebury personnel or personnel from other institutions whose students attend (or plan to attend) the school abroad

Budget and Financial:
• Reviews procurement card charges on a biweekly basis
• Assists Director in preparing School budget

Program Promotion:

• Updates program website, in coordination with IPOCS and assistance from Resident Coordinator
• Attends professional conferences, occasionally
• Visits U.S. colleges & universities to promote School in Jordan, when finances, timing and logistics permit
• Provides information for updating IPOCS and LS publications

General Responsibilities

Other Responsibilities:

• Performs other duties assigned
• Must be willing to be on-call 24/7 when programs are in session



• Master’s degree required
• Interest in working with students
• Fluency in Arabic and English
• In-country living and travel experience
• Familiarity with both U.S. and Jordanian educational systems
• Excellent computer and e-mail skills (Microsoft Office, Google Docs, online collaboration tools)
• Familiarity with ACTFL standards and proficiency guidelines and teaching/curriculum development experience desired.

• Willingness to work long hours and at weekends, when needed
• Crisis management experience highly desired
• Enthusiasm for education abroad and interest in internationalization and intercultural education
• Experience in student services or similar experience preferred
