Position Summary

Position Summary

This position supports and assists the director of the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference during the ten-day annual August conference and works alongside permanent administrative staff to train and support temporary work-scholars. The assistant director also helps welcome, orient, as assist faculty, fellows, scholars, and conference participants.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

Orient and train temporary administrative staff who perform a variety of tasks during the conference including hosting participant readings, organizing social functions such as dances and cocktail parties, serving meals in the Inn, running the lights and camera in the Little Theatre readings and lectures, producing the Writers’ Conference’s daily newspaper, The Crumb, and working in the back office;

Serves as co-head of the admissions board with the director to help select the participants and financial aid recipients of the August conference;

Assists the director during the conference to welcome and support writers of various ages, backgrounds, and skills, from participants to financial aid recipients, scholars, fellows, and faculty;

Organizes approximately thirty-five craft classes offered during the conference (usually offering a class him- or herself as well), vetting topics and class descriptions with faculty, fellows, and guests, as well as scheduling and creating a class roster;

Assists the director and works along with the administrative staff during the conference to address interpersonal problems, medical emergencies, or any other problems involving noncompliance with Middlebury College policies or Vermont state law;

Depending on experience and publication background, the assistant director may give a reading during the conference;

General Responsibilities

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

MFA in poetry, fiction, nonfiction, or its equivalent

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Well-developed written and oral communication and interpersonal skills required;
Knowledge of contemporary literature and publishing;
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively;
Ability to work in a stressful environment with frequent interruptions.

Experience

Familiarity with the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference is preferred, as is previous experience in arts administration and/or the teaching of creative writing. Preference for a writer who has published (or has forthcoming) a book
